What is Biochar?

Biochar is produced by burning materials known as biomass. Biomass is essentially reusable waste from plants and animals. Instead of burning biomass like charcoal in a grill, biochar is produced through a process known as pyrolysis.

During pyrolysis, biomass is burned in a controlled environment with very little oxygen. Since there is limited oxygen available during the pyrolysis process, the biomass does not catch fire. Instead, it is transformed into a stable, uncontaminated form of carbon that can be stored and used when needed.

After pyrolysis, we are left with biochar. It is a fine, black, lightweight substance that primarily consists of carbon. Nitrogen, hydrogen, and oxygen are some of the other elements that remain through the process, and they also provide important nutrients for cannabis growth.

When introduced into the soil, biochar promotes the growth and yield of plants and improves soil quality sustainably and self-actively. Biochar creates a natural and long-lasting soil fertility that continues through effective microorganisms with immediate, long-term, and reservoir effects. Biochar promotes loose soil structure and improved soil aeration. Water and nutrients are stored and available to plants as needed.

Our Living Biochar is pre-activated with EMs (effective microorganisms).

Benefits of Using Biochar for Cannabis Cultivation

This natural product helps plants thrive in various ways and is one of the most efficient and effective soil amendments on the market for several reasons. Due to its large surface area, it provides an optimal habitat for desirable (aerobic) microorganisms.

Increases Soil Fertility

As mentioned earlier, biochar contains specific elements that your cannabis plants need to thrive, including nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Biochar also provides various other minerals that help your plants grow healthily and produce abundant yields.

Improves Soil Quality

Biochar significantly contributes to improving the texture of loose or dense soil. These essential elements, in turn, remain in the soil, where the roots of your plants can find and utilize them effectively. In cases where the soil has poor drainage, biochar promotes drainage and provides plant roots with the oxygen they need to stay healthy.

Enhances Water and Nutrient Availability

Although fine-grained and lightweight, biochar is highly porous and has an impressively large surface area. This allows it to absorb additional water and nutrients into its pores. It also improves the cation exchange rate of the soil, which is the soil's ability to attract positively charged minerals and other elements needed for plant growth and health.

This means that these vital elements are always available when plants need them.

Promotes Microorganism Growth

It is no secret that many types of fungi and bacteria can be detrimental to plants. They can attack leaves, stems, and roots, hindering plant growth. However, certain types of microorganisms are beneficial for cannabis plants.

These helpful microorganisms provide several benefits for plant growth. They help improve the bioavailability of nutrients, the plant's ability to absorb those vitamins and minerals, and inhibit the growth of harmful microorganisms, among other things.

Due to the porous nature of biochar, it provides ample space for productive bacteria and fungi.

Regulates Soil pH

Another way biochar promotes plant health is by balancing the soil's pH. Cannabis generally thrives in soils with a pH between 6 and 7, meaning the soil is neither too acidic nor too alkaline.

Soil pH values outside of this range can have a range of negative effects on your plants.
